Upholstery Questions:

How much does it cost to reupholster my sofa?

A sofa is not a sofa, is not a sofa. Some are more straight-forward, some are extremely labor intensive. Labor costs depend on the style of sofa, the fabric being used and any internal repairs that may be needed, etc.

How much does it cost to “recover” my chair?

We do not just “recover” any piece of furniture. We take great care to take ALL materials off the furniture, do any potential internal frame repairs, replace webbing, reset/8-way hand tie springs, replace all padding with new and THEN apply your new fabric. If we don’t do all these steps, we haven’t provided you with an outstanding product in the end.

How long does it take to reupholster my sofa?

Time frames with reupholstering any piece of furniture is dependent on so many factors, it is not possible to say exactly how long it will take. We provide a time frame, which starts at the point of receiving your furniture and your fabric.

My furniture is 25 years old, but the foam still seems like it’s in good condition, why do I need to replace it?

Foam, like most things we use, has a lifespan. The lifespan of foam depends on a variety of factors such as how much use it gets. Foam must be replaced if it is yellowed, pulls apart easily or is starting to turn to dust.  If old foam is not replaced during the reupholstery process, it will make our beautiful work look bad and you will be unhappy with the end result.

Why do you need to see a picture of my piece of furniture before you can give me a ballpark estimate?

For us give you an accurate estimate, we must see a picture of your piece so we know what the job will potentially entail. If you can give us general measurements, that is also helpful.

Why should I reupholster my furniture versus buying new?  The cost of new furniture seems so much cheaper.

If your furniture is an antique/vintage, has sentimental value and such, these are the exact pieces of furniture we prefer to do. Once an antique is taken to the landfill, it is gone forever and cannot be reproduced in the same manner. The quality of vintage/antique furniture frames are typically better than newer furniture.

I have an inexpensive sofa and the fabric is worn.  Is it worth reupholstering?

Some furniture it not designed nor built to be reupholstered, we consider these types of furniture “disposable” and not worth the cost of reupholstery.

What do I need to do to get on your “waiting list”?

To get on our waiting list, you need to approve the estimate, have fabric in-hand and we need a job deposit.

Do you do automobile upholstery?

We do not do automobile upholstery as it is a different process which we are not equipped to do.

Fabric Questions:

Do you sell fabric at Unsprung Upholstery?

Yes, we do sell fabric. We have tons of samples and sample books. However, we do not have bolts of fabric in our shop to choose from.

How much does fabric cost?

Fabrics come in a variety of price points. The fabrics we carry range from $40 per yard and up. Depends on the fiber content, the type of fabric, the country of origin, the vendor, etc.

Why is there an additional cost to pattern match my furniture?

Fabrics with patterns must be matched and aligned over the furniture, so that it is visually pleasing. Matching patterns always takes additional yardage and additional time to do it properly, which leads to additional costs when doing reupholstery.

What kind of fabric should I look for?

Fabric selections depend on a variety of factors. These factors include but are not limited to: Your color and style taste, the amount of use the furniture will receive, indoor or outdoor, residential or commercial environments. Fabrics for upholstery use must be rated for upholstery.

What kind of fabric should I get that is “animal proof”?

There is no such fabric that is rated as “animal proof” nor indestructible.

What is a fabric repeat?

A repeat is when a motif or pattern is repeated in succession. Repeats can be vertical and horizontal, depending on the way the fabric is designed.

Repair Questions:

Can you repair the woodwork or caning on my furniture?

We can repair minor wood issues but certainly not all. Caning is a specialty trade, we refer caning to The Cane Connection.

Can you repair the “leather” on my sofa that is bubbling and peeling?

When a so called “leather” bubbles and peels, this means the material is “bonded leather”.  Bonded leather vs real leather hide is the same as a hamburger vs prime rib. Bonded leather is not repairable, in most cases, not worth the cost of reupholstery. Reupholstering these types of furniture in real leather is considered "luxury" work due to the cost of leather hides.
